These are fatty acids with a straight aliphatic chain. Pentanoic acid exists as a solid, very hydrophobic, practically insoluble (in water), and relatively neutral molecule. Pentanoic acid exists in all living species, ranging from bacteria to humans. Pentanoic acid is a potentially toxic compound.
