These are carboxylic acids containing exactly three carboxyl groups. But-1-ene-1,2,4-tricarboxylic acid is a very hydrophobic molecule, practically insoluble (in water), and relatively neutral. But-1-ene-1,2,4-tricarboxylic acid exists in all living species, ranging from bacteria to humans.
