Inheritance

Genetic and non-genetic forms of cataract exist. Detlefson and Yapp (1920) reported convincing evidence of single-locus autosomal recessive inheritance in US Holsteins, involving 70 offspring from the test mating of a bull and one of his sons to daughters of the bull. Gregory et al. (1943) reported equally convincing data involving what appeared to be the same defect in US Jerseys. In contrast, Ashton et al. (1977) discounted hereditary involvement in "two outbreaks of congenital cataract in [Holstein-Friesian] dairy herds" in the UK.
